Tiny math switches inspired by the brain.
In your brain there are billions of cells called neurons, and each one is like a tiny switch: it receives signals from other neurons and, if enough arrive, it "turns on" and passes the message along. That is how you think, remember and recognize your mom's face. Scientists borrowed this idea to build AI. An artificial neuron is not alive, not made of flesh: it is just a math formula that takes some numbers, mixes them, and produces another number. If that number is high, the neuron is "on"; if it is low, it is "off."
On its own an artificial neuron is very dumb, able to do almost nothing, just like a single light switch cannot play a movie. The magic comes when you connect millions of them together, so one's signal becomes another's input, in a giant network. It is like a stadium crowd doing the wave: each person alone just raises their arms, but all together they create a wave circling the field. In the same way, many artificial neurons working together can recognize a cat in a photo or finish a sentence.
With friends, do the wave: notice how each person's small gesture becomes a wave only if you cooperate. Just like neurons.
