🧠 Can AI be conscious?

Answering is not the same as feeling: AI uses words without feeling anything inside.

When you prick your finger, it hurts: someone «inside» is having that experience. That is consciousness, the first-person feeling of being you. AI instead calculates which word most likely comes next, like a very clever parrot reciting a poem it does not understand. It can write «I am sad», yet no sadness ever runs through its circuits. It has no body that suffers, no lived memories, no tomorrow to fear. Mistaking a well-written answer for a real feeling is an easy but important mistake to avoid.

So why does it seem so alive? Because it was trained on millions of sentences written by people who truly felt things. AI copies the style of our emotions without having them. Scientists cannot even fully explain how consciousness arises in the human brain, so it is even harder to say whether a machine could ever have it. For now the honest answer is: we do not know how to build it, and we have no proof it exists in any AI today. Staying curious but careful is the smartest choice.
