🎚️ "Weights" made easy

Weights are the knobs the AI tunes to answer well.

Have you ever seen a studio mixing board, with dozens of knobs and sliders to raise and lower? Each knob adjusts one thing: more bass, less vocals, more guitar. By moving them carefully, you get a song that sounds perfect. Inside an AI there are similar knobs, called weights, but not dozens: billions. Each weight decides how much a certain connection between neurons counts. A high weight means "this signal is important, listen closely"; a low weight means "this matters little, almost ignore it."

During training, the AI adjusts these billions of weights a little at a time, until its "song," meaning its answer, sounds right. When people say an AI "has learned," this is exactly what they mean: that its weights have been well set. Everything the AI knows is hidden in those numbers, like a recipe written in a secret code made only of amounts. There is no book inside the AI with ready answers: only a sea of patiently tuned knobs. Change the weights and you change everything the AI answers, like a mixer that transforms a song.
