🩺 AI in medicine: understanding and healing

It helps doctors spot illness earlier and invent new medicines.

Imagine a doctor who has seen a million X-rays: they would spot a suspicious mark in a flash. An AI can do exactly that. It is shown huge numbers of images of healthy and sick lungs, until it learns to notice the tiny details that escape even a skilled, tired eye. Then, when a real patient's scan arrives, the AI flags it for the doctor: "look here, check this little spot". But it does not heal or decide alone: it is always the human doctor who understands the patient and chooses.

AI also helps invent new medicines. Finding the right molecule is like looking for a key in a giant bunch: millions of possibilities, and it used to take years. Today an AI tries millions on the computer in a few hours and flags the most promising. But then the medicines must be truly tested, with care and patience, to make sure they help and do no harm. The machine finds clues fast; the person adds judgement, experience and heart.

Play "doctor-detective": draw 10 leaves, some with a spot. Flash them to a classmate for one second each: how many spots can they catch? That is what an AI does, but on thousands of images.
