🎭 Can AI make mistakes on purpose?

AI has no intentions: its mistakes are mechanical, not spiteful or deliberate lies.

When a friend tells you a lie «on purpose», they know it is false and choose to say it for a reason. AI does not work like that: it does not even know what is true, because it «believes» nothing. Sometimes it invents facts that look serious but are false, and experts call these slips «hallucinations». It is not a wicked lie: it is like a broken calculator giving the wrong number without meaning to. The intention is missing, and without intention there is no spite or deliberate deceit. It is just a mechanism that sometimes misses the target.

This does not make us safe, though: a mistake without malice can still hurt us if we trust it blindly. If AI gives you a wrong historical date very confidently and you write it in your homework, the low mark is real even if nobody meant to trick you. That is why always checking important sources is a champion's habit. And beware the other risk: someone could program an AI on purpose to deceive people. In that case the bad intention belongs to the human, not the machine. The machine is the tool; the responsibility is always ours.

Ask AI a fact you know well and check if it errs; if it does, try to explain why it is a mechanical mistake and not a lie.
