AI School › The big questions · Lesson 113 of 130
A machine smarter than all humans together: a powerful idea, but only a hypothesis.
Imagine an AI so skilled it surpasses the best scientist, the best poet and the best engineer in the world, all at once and in every field. This idea is called superintelligence. Some thinkers say that if one day we built an AGI, it might improve itself faster and faster, becoming enormous in a short time. It would be an incredibly powerful tool: it could help us cure diseases or stop pollution. But a giant hammer can build a house or smash it: it depends on who holds it and the rules we give it.
That is why many researchers study AI «safety» even before building anything that powerful. They want to be sure a super-AI understands what we truly want, not just the literal words of our orders. If you ask it «make us happy» and it misreads that, the trouble is huge. Careful though: superintelligence does not exist today and maybe never will. Talking about it helps us prepare calmly, not scare ourselves. The future is not written yet, and the people who learn these things well today will be the ones who write it wisely tomorrow.
Debate: «If a super-AI existed, what three absolute rules would you give it?». Compare lists and hunt for hidden traps.
