A program that learns from examples instead of following fixed instructions.
Imagine teaching a friend to recognise cats: you show them a hundred photos of cats and a hundred of dogs, and after a while they can tell them apart on their own. Artificial intelligence works like that: it is a computer program that learns by looking at huge numbers of examples, instead of following a list of instructions written one by one.
A normal program is like a recipe: it always follows the same steps. An AI is more like a student: the more examples it sees, the better it gets. That is why today AI can translate languages, recognise faces in photos and write texts, it has "studied" millions of examples.
Class game: one child thinks of a secret rule (e.g. "animals with a tail") and shows yes/no examples. The others must guess the rule: that is exactly what an AI does.
