🚗 Cars that drive themselves

Cameras, sensors and AI read the road to drive without hands on the wheel.

A self-driving car is full of "eyes": cameras, radar and sensors that look in every direction, even where you cannot. An AI receives all these images and in an instant understands: here is a pedestrian, there a red light, that is a bike about to turn. It learned by watching millions of hours of road, so it can recognise what is happening and decide whether to brake, turn or keep going.

It looks like magic, but it is not perfect. The road is full of surprises: a ball rolling, heavy rain, a sign covered by leaves. That is why these cars are tested with huge caution and someone is always watching. Driving is not just seeing: it is also predicting what a distracted child will do, and that is very hard. AI helps us make roads safer, but the responsibility to do things properly stays with the humans who build it.

🎒 Try it in class (or at home)

In the yard, one of you wears a blindfold and is guided by the others using only their voices: "stop, turn, forward". Feel how hard it is to trust commands arriving in time? That is the self-driving challenge.
