It steers robots on other planets and searches for far-off stars and worlds.
Space is so far away that a message from Earth to a robot on Mars can take many minutes to arrive. If the robot waited for every order from us, it would never move in time to avoid a rock. That is why it carries an AI: when it sees an obstacle, it decides on its own how to go around it, like a careful explorer in an unknown place. So it can walk, choose which rocks to study and send us the most interesting discoveries.
AI also helps telescopes here on Earth. Every night they photograph millions of stars: too many for one person to check them all. An AI reviews them and flags the strange things: a new planet, an exploding star, maybe something never seen before. Then astronomers point their gaze there and investigate. The universe is immense, and AI is like a powerful torch that helps us decide where to shine light first.
Build an obstacle course with chairs and guide a blindfolded "rover" with a few commands, but with delay: say the order and count to three before it moves. You will see why an onboard AI is needed.
