🌦️ The AI that forecasts the weather

It studies winds, clouds and temperatures to tell us if it will rain tomorrow.

Forecasting the weather is one of the hardest things in the world, because the atmosphere is like a giant recipe with a thousand ingredients mixing together: winds, humidity, temperature, pressure. A small change in one place can create a storm somewhere else. An AI learns to read the data from thousands of weather stations and satellites, recognises the patterns of past storms and uses them to guess what will happen in the coming hours or days.

This is not only about deciding whether to bring an umbrella. Predicting a hurricane or a flood in advance can save lives: people have time to get to safety. AI makes forecasts faster and more accurate, but the sky always keeps a few hidden surprises, and forecasts speak of probabilities, not certainties. That is why we say "70% chance of rain" and not "it will surely rain": the AI gives us the smartest bet, then nature plays its part.

🎒 Try it in class (or at home)

For a week, each morning bet whether it will rain and note yes/no. In the evening check: how many did you get right? You will discover how hard forecasting is, even for an AI.
