Grok

xAI, United States

Wired into X, with the loosest tongue of them all

xAI's model, Elon Musk's company. It reads posts on X as they appear and answers in a direct tone, without the politeness formulas of the others.

What it is like

Grok is the most recognisable by how it talks: no preamble, no "sure, here you go", straight to the point with the odd joke. Its real advantage is live access to posts on X, which makes it useful for reading what is being said right now about something that just happened. The flip side is exactly the same thing: what is said on one platform is not what happens in the world, and a loose confident tone makes a quick skim pass for verification.

Not to be confused with Groq, the chip company: near identical names, companies with nothing in common.

Where it is strong

Where it falls

When it is worth using

Understanding what is being said right now, and writing that has to sound direct.

One test to run on it

Ask what is being said about something from today, then check the same news outside X.
