Beam search (ricerca a fascio)
Beam search is a decoding strategy that, instead of choosing one word at a time, keeps several candidate sequences alive in parallel to find the overall most probable sentence. Imagine exploring a maze while keeping the five most promising paths (the "beam") open at once: at each fork you extend all five, discard the worst, and open new ones. In the end you pick the route with the best total score, not the one that merely looked good at the first step. This avoids the trap of a greedy early choice leading to a dead end.
Beam search matters mostly in machine translation and tasks with a well-defined "correct" answer. In conversational models it is less used because it tends to produce generic, repetitive text, trading naturalness for probability.
La beam search è una strategia di decodifica che, invece di scegliere una sola parola alla volta, tiene in vita più sequenze candidate in parallelo per trovare la frase complessivamente più probabile. Immagina di esplorare un labirinto mantenendo aperti contemporaneamente i cinque percorsi più promettenti (il "fascio" o beam): a ogni bivio prosegui tutti e cinque, poi scarti quelli che si rivelano peggiori e ne apri di nuovi. Alla fine scegli l'itinerario con il punteggio totale migliore, non quello che sembrava ottimo solo al primo passo. Così eviti la trappola di una scelta iniziale golosa che porta a un vicolo cieco.
La beam search conta soprattutto nella traduzione automatica e nelle attività dove esiste una risposta "corretta" ben definita. Nei modelli conversazionali è meno usata perché tende a produrre testo generico e ripetitivo, sacrificando naturalezza per probabilità.
