Context Window

The context window is the maximum number of tokens a language model can process in a single interaction, combining both the input (your prompt) and the output (the generated response). Different models have different context windows: GPT-4 reaches 128,000 tokens, Claude Opus 200,000, and some experimental models exceed 1 million.

Definition

A wide context window allows inserting long documents, extended conversations, entire codebases, or datasets into the prompt. When content exceeds the window limit, the model "forgets" older parts of the conversation, which can cause inconsistencies or less coherent responses.
