Embedding

An embedding is a numerical (vector) representation of text, an image, or any other data in a high-dimensional mathematical space. Language models transform words and paragraphs into vectors of numbers such that texts with similar meaning end up close in vector space, while texts with different meanings end up far apart.

Definition

Embeddings are the fundamental component of RAG systems and semantic search engines: they allow finding documents "semantically similar" to a query, even if they don't contain exactly the same keywords.
