DeepSeek

DeepSeek is the Chinese AI lab that shook the industry in early 2025 by releasing open-weight models with performance close to market leaders at a fraction of the declared training cost. The release of DeepSeek-R1, an open-weight reasoning model, demonstrated that the AI frontier is not a monopoly of large American labs.

Definition

The impact was threefold: it accelerated the race toward reasoning models (which "think" before answering), it reinvigorated the open-weight ecosystem by letting anyone run powerful models on their own servers, and it triggered geopolitical debate over costs, chips and technological competition.

For European companies, DeepSeek also raises governance questions: where is data processed, and with what guarantees? Model choice is never purely technical, it is also a compliance and risk decision.
