ETL stands for Extract, Transform, Load: pulling data from sources, reshaping it into a consistent format and loading it into a destination system, typically a data warehouse. It is the classic process by which organizations consolidate data scattered across dozens of systems into a single reliable base for analysis.
ETL stands for Extract, Transform, Load: pulling data from sources, reshaping it into a consistent format and loading it into a destination system, typically a data warehouse. It is the classic process by which organizations consolidate data scattered across dozens of systems into a single reliable base for analysis.
Extraction pulls data from databases, files and APIs. Transformation is the heart: removing duplicates, fixing formats (dates, currencies), unifying encodings, applying business rules. Loading deposits the result into the destination. The modern ELT variant swaps the last two steps: raw data is loaded first into the cloud warehouse and transformed there, leveraging its compute power, with tools such as dbt.
In AI, ETL prepares everything models consume: training corpora go through extraction, filtering and normalization; corporate documents for RAG are extracted, cleaned, chunked and turned into embeddings. ETL quality determines model quality: dirty data in, unreliable answers out. Beyond AI, it has been the backbone of business intelligence for decades.
The acronym solidified with the rise of data warehousing through the 1980s and 90s, the era when Bill Inmon (author of Building the Data Warehouse, 1992) and Ralph Kimball defined its methodologies. The three words literally describe the process phases; their sequence is so ingrained in the industry that the ELT variant is named simply by permuting them.
