Data governance is the set of rules, roles and processes with which an organization manages its data: who can access what, where it resides, how it's classified by sensitivity, how long it's kept, how it's protected. With AI it has become urgent: models are hungry for data, and without governance the wrong data ends up in the wrong places.
Typical incidents of the AI era: employees pasting proprietary code or customer data into consumer chatbots, confidential documents uploaded to "get them summarized", internal models trained on data that shouldn't have been included. Every case stems from the absence of clear rules, not bad intentions.
AI-ready governance defines: data classification (what is public, internal, confidential), which AI tools are approved for which data class, supplier contracts (no training on your data, data residency) and training people, because a policy nobody knows about protects nothing.
