Generative AI

AI Generativa

Generative AI is the family of AI systems capable of creating new content, text, images, audio, video, code, rather than merely analyzing or classifying existing content. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Midjourney and music generators all belong to this category.

Definition

The key distinction is with traditional "discriminative" AI: a system that detects whether an email is spam analyzes and decides; a system that writes the email creates. Generation happens through prediction: the model has learned patterns from millions of examples and produces new content consistent with those patterns.

It is the technology that brought AI from the lab to everyone's desk: it requires no technical skill to use, only the ability to communicate well what you want, that is, prompting. That's why prompt quality has become a measurable professional skill.
