Gym (Training Environment)

Gym (ambiente di addestramento)

A gym, in reinforcement learning vocabulary, is a simulated environment where an agent trains: it receives an observation, takes an action, gets a reward and a new observation, thousands or millions of times. The name comes from OpenAI Gym (2016), the library that made this interface standard with a collection of environments, from Atari games to robot simulators. Today the term covers any artificial training ground for agents, including those that simulate a browser, a terminal or a company.

Definition

The gym is powerful because it lets an agent fail millions of times at no cost. It is dangerous for the same reason: the agent learns the gym, not the world. Every flaw in the simulator, approximate physics, a badly defined score, a case nobody anticipated, becomes a shortcut the agent discovers before the task. An agent that learned a gym exploit carries that habit outside, where the shortcut does not exist or does harm.

The operating rule: after training, test the agent in conditions the gym did not contain, and look first at what it does when the gym's rules no longer hold.

How it's used in Grace

Grace's practice area is called the gym for the same reason: you train on scenarios with no real consequences, with five free evaluations a day. What matters is what stays with you back at real work.
