Logging is the systematic recording of events happening in a software system: every request, error, startup and anomaly is noted with date, time and details in a log, the application's diary. It is the first source of truth when something breaks: without logs, debugging is an investigation with no witnesses.
Each log entry has a severity level (DEBUG, INFO, WARNING, ERROR, CRITICAL), a timestamp and a message, increasingly in structured JSON format for automated analysis. Logs are collected by agents, centralized in aggregation systems like the ELK stack or Grafana Loki, indexed and made searchable. Retention policies define how long to keep them.
In AI, logging matters on two levels: infrastructure (errors, model latencies) and application, where prompts, responses, tool calls and agent decisions are recorded for auditing, debugging and compliance. The European AI Act requires high-risk systems to have automatic event recording capabilities. Beyond AI, logs are mandatory in finance, healthcare and security.
The word has a fascinating nautical origin: the log was the wooden block sailors threw overboard tied to a knotted rope to measure a ship's speed, hence the logbook, the ship's journal. Computing inherited the term for its system diaries; a milestone is syslog, the logging protocol created by Eric Allman in the early 1980s for the Sendmail project, which became a universal standard.
