Model card (scheda del modello)
A model card is a document accompanying an AI model that transparently describes its characteristics: what it is for, how it was trained, on what data, and its known limits and risks. It is like a food's nutrition label or a drug's package insert: before "consuming" the model, users can read ingredients, contraindications and side effects. A good card states intended and discouraged uses, benchmark performance, possible biases and the populations it was evaluated on, so no one deploys it blindly in contexts it is unfit for.
A model card matters because it promotes responsible, informed use of AI. It makes developers more accountable and helps users, companies and regulators decide whether a model is trustworthy for a given purpose, reducing the risk of improper or harmful applications.
Una model card è un documento che accompagna un modello di IA descrivendone in modo trasparente le caratteristiche: a cosa serve, come è stato addestrato, su quali dati, quali sono i suoi limiti e i rischi noti. È come l'etichetta nutrizionale di un alimento o il foglietto illustrativo di un farmaco: prima di "consumare" il modello, chi lo usa può leggere ingredienti, controindicazioni ed effetti collaterali. Una buona scheda dichiara gli usi previsti e quelli sconsigliati, le prestazioni sui benchmark, i possibili pregiudizi e le popolazioni su cui è stato valutato, così nessuno lo impiega alla cieca in contesti per cui non è adatto.
La model card conta perché promuove un uso responsabile e informato dell'IA. Rende gli sviluppatori più accountable e aiuta utenti, aziende e autorità a decidere se un modello è affidabile per un certo scopo, riducendo il rischio di applicazioni improprie o dannose.
