Perplessità
Perplexity is a metric measuring how "surprised" a language model is by the text it meets: the lower the value, the better it predicts the next word. Imagine a reader guessing a hidden word in a sentence: if few valid options come to mind and they are almost always right, perplexity is low; if they grope among dozens of possibilities, it is high. Technically it represents the average number of choices the model wavers between at each step. A model with perplexity 10 hesitates as if choosing among ten equally likely words; with perplexity 2, like flipping a coin.
Perplexity matters as a fast tool to compare models or versions during training. Its limit is that a good score does not guarantee useful, truthful or pleasant answers: it measures prediction, not perceived quality.
La perplessità è una metrica che misura quanto un modello linguistico è "sorpreso" dal testo che incontra: più è basso il valore, meglio il modello prevede la parola successiva. Immagina un lettore che indovina la parola coperta in una frase: se ha in mente poche opzioni valide ed è quasi sempre sicuro, la sua perplessità è bassa; se brancola tra decine di possibilità, è alta. Tecnicamente rappresenta il numero medio di scelte fra cui il modello esita a ogni passo. Un modello con perplessità 10 è, in media, indeciso come se dovesse scegliere fra dieci parole equiprobabili; con perplessità 2, come lanciare una moneta.
La perplessità conta perché è uno strumento rapido per confrontare modelli o versioni durante l'addestramento. Il limite è che un buon punteggio non garantisce risposte utili, veritiere o gradevoli: misura la previsione, non la qualità percepita.
