Deep Learning

Deep learning is the family of machine learning techniques based on neural networks with many layers ("deep", hence the name). Each layer learns increasingly abstract representations of the data: in images, early layers recognize edges and colors, intermediate ones shapes and textures, final ones whole objects like faces or cars.

Definition

Deep learning enabled the breakthroughs of the last decade: accurate speech recognition, quality machine translation, computer vision and large language models. Its strength is that it doesn't require manually defining which features to look for in the data, it discovers them on its own, given enough data and computing power.

Models like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are deep learning systems based on the Transformer architecture.
