Epoch

Epoca

Definition

An epoch is one complete pass of the training algorithm over the entire available dataset. If the model has seen every example in the dataset exactly once, it has finished one epoch. It's like studying a whole book cover to cover: reading it once rarely suffices, and to truly absorb it you reread it several times. Likewise a model passes through the dataset for many epochs, refining parameters each round. Each epoch consists of many smaller steps, one per mini-batch, where prediction, loss computation, and gradient-descent updates occur.

The number of epochs is a delicate choice: too few and the model stays underprepared, too many and it risks memorizing the data instead of generalizing, falling into overfitting. Tracking error on unseen data across epochs helps stop training at the right moment.

Un'epoca è un passaggio completo dell'algoritmo di addestramento su tutto il dataset disponibile. Se il modello ha visto ogni esempio del set di dati esattamente una volta, ha completato un'epoca. È come studiare un intero libro dall'inizio alla fine: leggerlo una volta raramente basta, e per assimilarlo davvero lo si rilegge più volte. Allo stesso modo un modello attraversa il dataset per molte epoche, affinando i parametri a ogni ripasso. Ogni epoca si compone di tanti passi più piccoli, uno per ciascun mini-lotto di esempi, in cui avvengono previsione, calcolo della perdita e aggiornamento tramite discesa del gradiente.

Il numero di epoche è una scelta delicata: poche e il modello resta impreparato, troppe e rischia di memorizzare i dati invece di generalizzare, cadendo in overfitting. Monitorare l'errore su dati mai visti, epoca dopo epoca, aiuta a fermare l'addestramento al momento giusto.
