Orchestrazione
Orchestration is the automated coordination of multiple components, services or tasks so they work together according to a plan: who starts first, who waits for whom, what to do when a step fails. As a conductor makes dozens of musicians play as one coherent whole, the orchestrator makes heterogeneous systems execute a unified process.
An orchestrator holds the flow definition, often a graph of tasks with dependencies (a DAG), tracks its state, launches each step when prerequisites are met, and handles retries, timeouts and compensations on error. It differs from choreography, where services coordinate themselves by reacting to events with no central director. Airflow orchestrates data pipelines, Kubernetes orchestrates containers, Temporal orchestrates long-running processes.
In AI, orchestration is the heart of agentic systems: frameworks like LangGraph and CrewAI coordinate multiple agents and tools in flows with branches, loops and human oversight, deciding which model to call, with what context and in what order. Beyond AI it governs infrastructure provisioning, business processes and deployments.
The term comes from music: to orchestrate is to write the parts for the orchestra's instruments, a word tracing back to the Greek orchestra, the theater space where the chorus moved. Computing adopted it for service coordination with the spread of SOA architectures in the early 2000s, and consecrated it in the following decade with container orchestration, a category Kubernetes became synonymous with.
