Reranking (riordinamento)
Reranking is a second filtering step that reorders search results to bring the most relevant ones to the top. Many systems work in two stages: first a fast method retrieves dozens of potentially useful candidates, then a more sophisticated but slower model re-examines them one by one and reorders them with greater precision. It is like hiring: a quick screening discards clearly off-topic resumes, then an in-depth interview ranks the finalists by real merit. The reranker reads question and document together, catching nuances the coarser first search had ignored.
Reranking matters because a RAG system's quality depends on the few passages that reach the model's context. Retrieving many documents is not enough if the best stay buried at the bottom: reordering ensures the model gets the truly most relevant information, reducing errors and hallucinations.
Il reranking è un secondo passaggio di filtraggio che riordina i risultati di una ricerca per portare in cima i più pertinenti. Molti sistemi funzionano in due fasi: prima un metodo veloce recupera decine di candidati potenzialmente utili, poi un modello più sofisticato ma più lento li riesamina uno per uno e li riordina con maggiore precisione. È come una selezione di personale: prima uno screening rapido scarta i curriculum evidentemente fuori tema, poi un colloquio approfondito ordina i finalisti secondo il merito reale. Il reranker legge insieme domanda e documento, cogliendo sfumature che la prima ricerca, più grezza, aveva ignorato.
Il reranking conta perché la qualità di un sistema RAG dipende dai pochi passaggi che finiscono nel contesto del modello. Recuperare tanti documenti non basta se i migliori restano sepolti in fondo: il riordinamento assicura che il modello riceva le informazioni davvero più rilevanti, riducendo errori e allucinazioni.
