Retrieval (recupero)
Retrieval is the process of finding and pulling, from a large collection of documents, the few passages most useful for answering a question. It is the internal "search engine" that precedes generation: given a request, the system fishes the relevant fragments from the knowledge base and makes them available to the model. Imagine an assistant who, before answering, runs to the archive and returns with exactly the three right cards instead of the whole cabinet. Retrieval can rely on keywords, on meaning (semantic), or a mix, and its quality is measured by how often the right documents land among those retrieved.
Retrieval matters because it is the heart of RAG systems and the main way to anchor a model to verifiable, up-to-date sources. Poor retrieval defeats everything else: if the right passages never arrive, even the best model cannot answer correctly.
Il retrieval è il processo di trovare e recuperare, da una grande raccolta di documenti, i pochi passaggi più utili a rispondere a una domanda. È il "motore di ricerca" interno che precede la generazione: data una richiesta, il sistema pesca dalla base di conoscenza i frammenti rilevanti e li mette a disposizione del modello. Immagina un assistente che, prima di risponderti, corre in archivio e torna con esattamente le tre schede giuste anziché con l'intero schedario. Il retrieval può basarsi su parole chiave, su significato (semantico) o su una combinazione dei due, e la sua bontà si misura da quanto spesso i documenti giusti finiscono tra quelli recuperati.
Il retrieval conta perché è il cuore dei sistemi RAG e la principale via per ancorare un modello a fonti verificabili e aggiornate. Un recupero scadente vanifica tutto il resto: se i passaggi giusti non arrivano, nemmeno il modello migliore potrà rispondere correttamente.
