Database vettoriale
A vector database is a store specialized in keeping and searching vectors, the numerical representations (embeddings) of texts, images or audio produced by a model. Unlike a traditional database, which seeks exact word matches, a vector one finds items that are "close" in meaning by measuring the distance between vectors. Imagine a library where books are arranged in space by topic rather than by title: similar ones sit near each other, so searching "Italian cooking" also surfaces "Mediterranean recipes" without matching words. It uses smart indexes to stay very fast even with billions of vectors.
A vector database matters because it is the engine behind semantic search and RAG systems. Without it, giving a language model fast access to a vast external knowledge base would be impractical at scale.
Un database vettoriale è un archivio specializzato nel conservare e cercare vettori, cioè le rappresentazioni numeriche (embedding) di testi, immagini o audio prodotte da un modello. A differenza di un database tradizionale, che cerca corrispondenze esatte di parole, quello vettoriale trova gli elementi "vicini" per significato, misurando la distanza fra i vettori. Immagina una biblioteca dove i libri non sono ordinati per titolo ma disposti nello spazio in base agli argomenti: quelli simili stanno vicini, così cercando "cucina italiana" trovi anche "ricette mediterranee" senza che le parole coincidano. Usa indici intelligenti per restare velocissimo anche con miliardi di vettori.
Il database vettoriale conta perché è il motore che rende possibile la ricerca semantica e i sistemi RAG. Senza di esso, dare a un modello linguistico accesso rapido a una vasta base di conoscenza esterna sarebbe impraticabile su larga scala.
