Self-consistency

Self-consistency means having the model generate multiple independent answers to the same question and picking the most recurrent or coherent one. It rests on a simple observation: if the model reaches the same result via different paths, that result is probably more reliable.

Definition

Practical use without an API: ask the same question in 3 separate conversations (or ask it to "solve this problem 3 independent ways and compare the results") and check for convergence. Divergent answers signal that the problem is ambiguous or at the edge of the model's capability and deserves human verification.

It is particularly useful for calculations, analyses with a verifiable outcome, and important decisions. Together with Chain of Thought and Tree of Thoughts, it forms the enhanced-reasoning toolkit: techniques that trade more tokens for more reliability.
