Output Format is the specification of how you want the AI to structure and present its response. Not specifying the format is one of the most common prompting mistakes: the AI chooses what it considers the most universal format, which is often not the most useful for the user's specific intended use.
The format can be specified in great detail: "Table with 5 columns: name, description, advantage, disadvantage, priority (High/Medium/Low)", "Email in business letter format with subject, 3-paragraph body and signature", "JSON with keys: title, abstract, key_points (array), conclusion", "List of 7 bullet points, each 15 words maximum", "Slide deck with title, 3 sections and a final call to action".
