Step-back prompting is a technique in which, before tackling a specific problem, the model is asked to take a step back and formulate the general question or principle underlying the problem itself. The model first answers the abstract question, then uses that answer as a basis for solving the concrete case.
Step-back prompting is a technique in which, before tackling a specific problem, the model is asked to take a step back and formulate the general question or principle underlying the problem itself. The model first answers the abstract question, then uses that answer as a basis for solving the concrete case.
The mechanism unfolds in two phases: in the first, the prompt invites the model to identify the general concept, law or principle relevant to the category of problem (for example the physical properties involved, before computing a specific value); in the second, the model applies that principle to the particular case. Separating abstraction from calculation reduces errors that arise when the model focuses too early on details without having recalled the correct rule.
This technique proves useful in scientific, mathematical or logical reasoning problems where a general rule applies to many cases: first asking "which physical principle governs this phenomenon" and only then solving the specific exercise, or first asking "what are the general criteria for evaluating a contract" before analyzing a particular clause.
The term literally describes the action of "stepping back" from the problem to gain a broader view, an expression that appeared in prompting research literature alongside other reasoning decomposition techniques such as chain-of-thought.
