Constraints, in prompting, are specifications of what the AI must avoid, respect, or mandatorily include in the output. Contrary to intuition, constraints don't limit the AI, they guide it. A prompt without constraints produces generic and often unusable output; a prompt with clear constraints produces output calibrated to real needs.
Constraints can concern tone ("professional but not formal"), length ("2 pages maximum, 500 words minimum"), content to exclude ("no specific ROI promises", "no technical jargon"), mandatory content ("always include a final call to action"), a forbidden format ("no bullet lists in the main section"), or domain restrictions ("refer only to the data provided, don't invent").
