AI Dictionary › AI Models
DALL-E is a series of image generation models developed by OpenAI, able to produce original images from text descriptions. The name blends the surrealist painter Dalí with the robot Wall-E, evoking the meeting of art and automation. The models translate a natural-language prompt into a visual depiction, handling styles, compositions and abstract concepts; later versions improved text fidelity, detail rendering and the ability to place legible text inside images. DALL-E is accessible through OpenAI's APIs and embedded in products like ChatGPT, with no software to install.
Unlike open-weight models, DALL-E is a closed service: it is used through the cloud, with the convenience of no hardware to manage but less control over the model and per-generation costs.
