C2PA, short for Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, is an open technical standard developed by a consortium of technology and media companies to certify the origin and history of digital content. Its purpose is to make the provenance of images, video and audio verifiable, indicating who created them, with which tools and what modifications they underwent, including any involvement of artificial intelligence. The information is held in cryptographically signed metadata attached to the file, so tampering or alterations can be detected.
Amid the growing spread of synthetic content, C2PA provides the technical infrastructure to distinguish authentic material from manipulated or artificially generated content. It does not prevent the creation of fakes but offers a reliable tool to verify the provenance chain, supporting the transparency required by emerging regulations.
