The stimuli are compact suggestions, for example a list of keywords to include, an aspect to emphasize, or an angle to favor, inserted in the prompt alongside the main instruction. The model retains freedom in phrasing but is guided to touch on certain points, reducing variance between responses generated from the same base prompt.
In practical use, this technique is useful for generating summaries that must include specific concepts, for guiding customer service response generation toward priority topics, or for steering creative writing to include mandatory elements without constraining the entire text structure. It can also be used to personalize similar responses for multiple users while keeping a common core but varying the stimuli.
The name comes from research on fine-grained control of text generation, where the "stimulus" denotes precisely the additional, targeted information that directs the model, distinguishing it from a generic instruction or a full example.
Il directional stimulus prompting e' una tecnica in cui, oltre alla richiesta principale, si fornisce al modello un piccolo insieme di indizi o parole chiave — chiamati stimoli direzionali — che orientano la risposta verso un contenuto o uno stile specifico, senza dettare l'intera risposta parola per parola.
Gli stimoli sono suggerimenti compatti, ad esempio una lista di parole chiave da includere, un aspetto da enfatizzare o un angolo da privilegiare, inseriti nel prompt accanto all'istruzione principale. Il modello mantiene liberta' nella formulazione ma viene guidato a toccare determinati punti, riducendo la varianza tra risposte generate a partire dallo stesso prompt di base.
Nell'uso pratico questa tecnica e' utile per generare riassunti che devono includere concetti specifici, per guidare la generazione di risposte in un customer service verso argomenti prioritari, o per orientare la scrittura creativa includendo elementi obbligatori senza vincolare l'intera struttura del testo. Puo' anche essere impiegata per personalizzare risposte simili a piu' utenti mantenendo un nucleo comune ma variando gli stimoli.
Il nome nasce dalla ricerca sul controllo fine della generazione di testo, dove lo "stimolo" indica proprio l'informazione aggiuntiva e mirata che indirizza il modello, distinguendola da un'istruzione generica o da un esempio completo.
