Directional Stimulus Prompting

Directional stimulus prompting is a technique in which, alongside the main request, the model is given a small set of hints or keywords, called directional stimuli, that steer the response toward specific content or style, without dictating the entire response word for word.

How it works

The stimuli are compact suggestions, for example a list of keywords to include, an aspect to emphasize, or an angle to favor, inserted in the prompt alongside the main instruction. The model retains freedom in phrasing but is guided to touch on certain points, reducing variance between responses generated from the same base prompt.

Applications

In practical use, this technique is useful for generating summaries that must include specific concepts, for guiding customer service response generation toward priority topics, or for steering creative writing to include mandatory elements without constraining the entire text structure. It can also be used to personalize similar responses for multiple users while keeping a common core but varying the stimuli.

History & etymology

The name comes from research on fine-grained control of text generation, where the "stimulus" denotes precisely the additional, targeted information that directs the model, distinguishing it from a generic instruction or a full example.
