Emotion prompting is a technique that involves adding phrases with emotional or motivational connotation to the prompt, for example emphasizing the importance of the task or the impact the response will have, with the goal of influencing the quality, accuracy or perceived effort in the response generated by the model.
The mechanism consists of pairing the technical instruction with a phrase emphasizing the relevance of the task, such as indicating that the response will be used in an important context or that precision is especially critical. The model, trained on human text where similar emphasis often accompanies genuinely more careful requests, tends to show more detailed or accurate responses in the presence of these linguistic signals.
In practical use, this technique is employed for tasks where the highest level of care in the response is sought, for example requests for careful review of an important text or scrupulous verification of calculations, adding phrases that signal to the model what is at stake. It should be used with moderation: excessive or artificial use can be ineffective or even counterproductive compared to clear, direct instructions.
The term describes the observation, which emerged in studies of language model behavior, that emotionally or motivationally charged language in the prompt can measurably influence the output, a phenomenon linked to how models replicate stylistic patterns present in the training data.
