Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM)

Definition

An LSTM, long short-term memory, is an advanced variant of recurrent networks, designed to remember information over much longer spans. Its secret is a memory cell regulated by 'gates', small mechanisms that decide what to keep, what to forget, and what to release at each step. It's like a diligent assistant with a notebook: they jot down important information, erase what's become useless, and consult their notes when needed, avoiding forgetting crucial facts from much earlier. This mechanism largely solves the vanishing-gradient problem typical of classic RNNs.

For years LSTMs were the standard for translation, speech recognition, time-series forecasting, and text generation. Though surpassed by transformers on many language tasks, they remain competitive and efficient when data is sequential, resources are limited, or sequences aren't too long, and are still widely used in industry.

Una LSTM, memoria a lungo e breve termine, è una variante evoluta delle reti ricorrenti, progettata per ricordare informazioni per intervalli molto più lunghi. Il suo segreto è una cella di memoria regolata da 'porte', piccoli meccanismi che decidono cosa conservare, cosa dimenticare e cosa lasciar uscire a ogni passo. È come un assistente diligente che tiene un taccuino: annota le informazioni importanti, cancella quelle diventate inutili e consulta gli appunti quando servono, evitando di dimenticare fatti cruciali comparsi molto prima. Questo meccanismo risolve in gran parte il problema dei gradienti che svaniscono, tipico delle RNN classiche.

Per anni le LSTM sono state lo standard per traduzione, riconoscimento vocale, previsione di serie temporali e generazione di testo. Pur superate dai transformer in molti compiti linguistici, restano competitive ed efficienti quando i dati sono sequenziali, le risorse limitate o le sequenze non eccessivamente lunghe, e sono ancora ampiamente usate nell'industria.
