Definition

A recurrent neural network, or RNN, is an architecture designed to process sequences like text, audio, or time series, keeping a memory of what it has seen before. It processes elements one at a time and holds an internal state it updates at each step, carrying context along. It's like reading a sentence word by word while remembering earlier words to grasp the overall meaning: without memory, each word would be disconnected from the rest. This makes it naturally suited to data where order is crucial.

RNNs enabled translation, speech recognition, and sequential prediction, but struggle to recall information far back in time due to vanishing gradients. Variants like LSTMs eased the problem, but for long sequences they've largely been surpassed by transformers, which process the whole sequence in parallel and capture long-range relationships more effectively.

Una rete neurale ricorrente, o RNN, è un'architettura progettata per elaborare sequenze, come testo, audio o serie temporali, mantenendo una memoria di ciò che ha visto in precedenza. Elabora gli elementi uno alla volta e conserva uno stato interno che aggiorna a ogni passo, portandosi dietro il contesto. È come leggere una frase parola per parola ricordando quelle già lette per capire il significato complessivo: senza memoria, ogni parola sarebbe scollegata dalle altre. Questo la rende naturalmente adatta a dati in cui l'ordine è cruciale.

Le RNN hanno reso possibili traduzione, riconoscimento vocale e previsioni sequenziali, ma soffrono nel ricordare informazioni molto lontane nel tempo a causa di gradienti che svaniscono. Varianti come le LSTM hanno mitigato il problema, ma per sequenze lunghe sono state in gran parte superate dai transformer, che elaborano l'intera sequenza in parallelo cogliendo relazioni a lungo raggio con maggiore efficacia.
