AI technical documentation is the structured set of information a provider must prepare and keep up to date on an AI system, particularly if classified as high-risk, to demonstrate to authorities and users how the system was designed, trained, tested, and how it must be used correctly.

Complete technical documentation typically includes a general description of the system and its intended purpose, information on the data used for training and its provenance, accuracy and robustness test results, the risk management measures adopted, instructions for use aimed at the deployer, and information on the human oversight capabilities provided. It must be drafted before market placement and updated when the system is substantially modified.
For companies, producing this documentation requires coordination between the teams developing the model and those handling regulatory compliance, often complicated by the fact that much relevant technical information (data composition, architectural choices, known limitations) must be gathered progressively during development, not reconstructed after the fact. Deficient documentation is among the most common causes of non-compliance found by supervisory authorities.
The model draws on technical documentation already long required for other regulated products in Europe, such as medical devices, where traceability of design choices has for decades been a necessary condition for demonstrating the safety of a complex product.

Una documentazione tecnica completa include tipicamente la descrizione generale del sistema e del suo scopo previsto, informazioni sui dati usati per l'addestramento e la loro provenienza, i risultati dei test di accuratezza e robustezza, le misure di gestione del rischio adottate, le istruzioni per l'uso destinate al deployer, e le informazioni sulle capacità di sorveglianza umana previste. Deve essere redatta prima dell'immissione sul mercato e aggiornata quando il sistema viene modificato in modo sostanziale.
Per le aziende, produrre questa documentazione richiede un lavoro di coordinamento tra i team che sviluppano il modello e chi si occupa di conformità normativa, spesso complicato dal fatto che molte informazioni tecniche rilevanti (composizione dei dati, scelte architetturali, limiti noti) devono essere raccolte progressivamente durante lo sviluppo, non ricostruite a posteriori. Una documentazione carente è tra le cause più comuni di non conformità riscontrate dalle autorità di vigilanza.
Il modello si ispira alla documentazione tecnica già richiesta da tempo per altri prodotti regolamentati in Europa, come i dispositivi medici, dove la tracciabilità delle scelte progettuali è da decenni condizione necessaria per dimostrare la sicurezza di un prodotto complesso.
