A deepfake is synthetic content, video, audio or image, generated by AI to make a real person appear to say or do something they never said or did. The technology that clones voices and faces is now accessible to anyone, and the quality makes fakes increasingly hard to tell apart from the real thing.
The risks for companies are concrete and already documented: scams using a cloned CEO voice ordering urgent wire transfers (AI-powered "fake executive" fraud), fake videos that damage reputation, candidates passing video interviews with synthetic identities.
Defenses: out-of-band verification for sensitive requests (call back on a known number, never trust audio/video alone), staff training, watermarking and detection tools. The AI Act mandates transparency: content generated or manipulated by AI must be disclosed as such.
