Format Anchoring

Ancoraggio del Formato

Format anchoring is showing the model a concrete example of the desired output format, a filled or partially filled template, so it "anchors" its response to that exact shape. It is far more effective than describing the format in words. Example prompt: "Answer EXACTLY in this format:\ Company: <name>\ Risk: <high|medium|low>\ Reason: <one sentence>\ \ Now analyse this company: ...". By giving the skeleton with placeholders, the model fills the fields without inventing structure, and the output becomes uniform and parsable.

Definition

Use it when you need a rigid, repeatable format across many inputs: cards, table rows, standardised replies. Anchoring with an example curbs format drift far better than instructions alone, and pairs well with few-shot and structured output.
