Prompt a Formato Guidato
Format-guided prompting is the technique of specifying in the prompt not only what the model must produce but also the precise structure in which it must organize the response, for example a bulleted list, a table, a defined number of sections, or a specific order of topics to cover.
Unlike an open-ended request, where the model autonomously chooses how to structure the output, here the prompt includes explicit indications about the final form: headings to use, number of paragraphs, presence or absence of lists, approximate length of each section. The model follows these structural indications while generating the content, integrating form and substance in the same pass.
This technique is essential whenever the output must fit into a downstream flow that expects a predictable form: a business report with fixed sections, a response that must fit an email template, or a comparison between options that must necessarily appear as a table to be readable. It reduces the manual reformatting work after generation.
The concept stems from the practical observation that specifying the desired form together with the content produces more usable results than asking for the content first and reformatting it separately afterward, and it has become a standard component of writing effective prompts for operational tasks.
