Multi-agent debate prompting is a technique in which multiple instances of a model, or multiple distinct models, generate independent responses to the same problem, then exchange and critique each other's arguments over several rounds, with the goal of reaching a final answer more accurate than any single instance would have produced alone.
The process typically unfolds as follows: each agent independently produces an initial response to the problem; the responses are then shared among the agents, who are asked to critically evaluate each other's positions and possibly revise their own; after a few rounds of this exchange, the responses converge or the most supported position is selected. The diversity of reasoning paths across instances helps catch errors that a single isolated generation would not have corrected.
This technique applies to complex reasoning tasks where accuracy takes priority over speed or computational cost: articulated math problems, evaluations with multiple factors to balance, or decisions that benefit from cross-checked critical review before being finalized.
The name explicitly evokes debate among multiple parties as a method for approaching the truth, an idea present in the tradition of collective reasoning, here transposed to a context where the "participants" are instances of the same AI system or different models set against each other.
