AI Dictionary › Prompting
Multi-persona prompting is a technique in which the model is asked to embody several distinct figures or viewpoints within the same task, having them "dialogue" or express separate opinions on the same topic, and then possibly synthesizing the different perspectives into a shared conclusion.
The prompt defines two or more roles with different characteristics, expertise or priorities, and asks the model to generate each one's contribution in sequence or as an exchange, keeping each persona's voice consistent throughout the text. The model thus simulates a discussion or comparison between different perspectives while remaining a single system generating all the parts.
This technique is useful for exploring a problem from different angles before deciding, for example simulating the viewpoint of a technical expert and a sales manager on the same proposal, or contrasting a proponent and a skeptic of a given choice to surface arguments for and against in a balanced way.
The term extends the concept of the persona pattern, already known in prompting for adopting a single role, to the case where multiple personas are made to interact within the same prompt, a natural evolution as models began being used to simulate debates or decision processes with multiple viewpoints.
