AI compliance

Compliance AI

AI compliance is the business function, and the related set of practices, dedicated to ensuring that the development, procurement and use of AI systems meet applicable regulations, from the EU AI Act to the GDPR, from sector-specific rules to voluntary standards such as ISO/IEC 42001, as well as the internal policies the organization has set for itself.

Definition

How it works

In practice, an AI compliance program includes mapping all AI systems used or developed by the organization, classifying their risk level, periodically checking compliance with the obligations applicable to each, managing the required documentation, and coordinating with external AI technology providers so that systems purchased from third parties also meet the same standards.

Applications

For companies, investing in AI compliance often means creating a dedicated role or team, distinct from but coordinated with the legal function, the data protection team and technical functions, able to translate complex regulatory requirements into operational checklists that make sense to those developing or using the systems every day. It is an increasingly requested function from customers and partners as a prerequisite for business relationships.

History & etymology

The term spread rapidly following the approval of the EU AI Act, mirroring the evolution already seen for privacy compliance after the introduction of the GDPR, when many organizations had to structure dedicated data protection functions for the first time.
