ISO/IEC 42001 is the first certifiable international standard for AI management systems (AIMS). Like ISO 27001 for information security, it defines organizational requirements for developing and using AI responsibly: governance, risk and impact assessment, lifecycle controls, transparency and continuous improvement.
For companies it is the tool to demonstrate to customers, partners and authorities that AI use is governed with method, not improvised. It integrates naturally with EU AI Act compliance: many companies adopt it precisely as the organizational scaffolding to arrive ready for the regulatory obligations.
Certification requires a third-party audit and matters first to those who develop or integrate AI systems, but heavy users in regulated sectors are also adopting it as a signal of trustworthiness to the market.
