An algorithmic impact assessment is a structured analysis conducted before or during the development of an AI system to identify, document and mitigate the possible negative effects that system could have on people, social groups or fundamental rights. It is the tool through which an organization puts the risk-management principle into practice, examining the system's specific context of use rather than limiting itself to abstract technical characteristics.

A typical assessment examines who the people potentially affected by the system are, which decisions the system influences or automates, what categories of data are used, which groups might experience a disproportionate impact, and what mitigation measures (technical, organizational or procedural) are put in place. The result is typically a document that accompanies the system throughout its lifecycle and is updated whenever the system changes significantly.
For companies, conducting these assessments before deployment allows fairness, safety or compliance problems to be caught while they are still cheap to fix, instead of discovering them after launch when reputational impact and remediation costs are far higher. It is an exercise requiring the involvement of multidisciplinary expertise, not only technical.
The model draws on the data protection impact assessment required under the GDPR, borrowing its logic of preventive risk analysis and extending it from the sole processing of personal data to the broader set of social and individual effects an algorithmic system can produce.
La valutazione d'impatto algoritmico è un'analisi strutturata condotta prima o durante lo sviluppo di un sistema AI per identificare, documentare e mitigare i possibili effetti negativi che quel sistema potrebbe avere su persone, gruppi sociali o diritti fondamentali. È lo strumento con cui un'organizzazione traduce in pratica il principio di gestione del rischio, esaminando lo specifico contesto d'uso del sistema anziché limitarsi a caratteristiche tecniche astratte.
Una valutazione tipica esamina chi sono le persone potenzialmente impattate dal sistema, quali decisioni il sistema influenza o automatizza, quali categorie di dati vengono utilizzate, quali gruppi potrebbero subire un impatto sproporzionato e quali misure di mitigazione (tecniche, organizzative o procedurali) vengono messe in atto. Il risultato è tipicamente un documento che accompagna il sistema lungo tutto il suo ciclo di vita e viene aggiornato quando il sistema cambia in modo significativo.
Per le aziende, condurre queste valutazioni prima del deployment consente di intercettare problemi di equità, sicurezza o conformità normativa quando sono ancora poco costosi da correggere, invece di scoprirli dopo il lancio quando l'impatto reputazionale e i costi di rimedio sono molto più alti. È un esercizio che richiede il coinvolgimento di competenze multidisciplinari, non solo tecniche.
Il modello si ispira alla valutazione d'impatto sulla protezione dei dati richiesta dal GDPR, di cui riprende la logica di analisi preventiva del rischio, estendendola dal solo trattamento dei dati personali all'insieme più ampio degli effetti sociali e individuali che un sistema algoritmico può produrre.
