A corporate AI governance board is the internal, typically multidisciplinary body an organization sets up to centrally oversee decisions concerning the development, procurement and use of its AI systems, acting as a coordination point between the technical, legal, risk and business functions involved.
A board of this kind usually brings together representatives from technology, legal, data protection, risk management and the business lines using AI, with the task of approving or rejecting the adoption of new high-impact systems, defining internal AI use policies, periodically monitoring systems already in use, and acting as the decision-making body in case of incidents or critical reports.
For companies, setting up a board like this is often the first concrete step in translating general AI governance principles into a real decision-making process, with assigned responsibilities and traceability of choices made: it is the organizational structure that operationalizes written policies, preventing them from remaining theoretical documents with no practical application.
This form of governance draws on risk committees and compliance committees already long established in regulated sectors such as finance and insurance, adapted to the specifics of artificial intelligence with the addition of machine learning technical expertise that traditionally was not part of these decision-making bodies.
