The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary framework developed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology to help organisations manage risks related to artificial intelligence systems. It is not a law but a structured guide offering a common language and method to identify, measure and reduce risks across an AI system's entire lifecycle. It is organised into four core functions: govern, map, measure and manage, which prompt organisations to assign responsibilities, understand the context of use, assess performance and potential harms, and act to mitigate them.
The framework promotes trustworthy systems that are accurate, safe, transparent, fair and privacy-respecting. Although American and non-binding, it is widely used as a practical reference internationally to structure AI governance programmes.
Il NIST AI Risk Management Framework è un quadro volontario elaborato dal National Institute of Standards and Technology statunitense per aiutare le organizzazioni a gestire i rischi legati ai sistemi di intelligenza artificiale. Non è una legge, ma una guida strutturata che offre un linguaggio comune e un metodo per identificare, misurare e ridurre i rischi lungo tutto il ciclo di vita di un sistema AI. Si articola in quattro funzioni principali: governare, mappare, misurare e gestire, che invitano a definire responsabilità, comprendere il contesto d'uso, valutare le prestazioni e i possibili danni, e intervenire per mitigarli.
Il framework promuove sistemi affidabili, cioè accurati, sicuri, trasparenti, equi e rispettosi della privacy. Pur essendo statunitense e non vincolante, è molto usato come riferimento pratico anche a livello internazionale per strutturare programmi di governance dell'AI.
