Phi (SLM Microsoft)
Phi is a series of small language models developed by Microsoft Research. The core idea is that compact models, trained on very high-quality, carefully curated data, can reach surprising performance on reasoning and language understanding despite a relatively small parameter count. This efficiency lets Phi models run on resource-constrained devices such as laptops, phones or embedded systems, without powerful servers or cloud connections. The weights are released openly, enabling integration into local applications and low-latency products.
Phi demonstrates a data-quality-first approach rather than pure scale, useful where privacy, cost and offline operation are priorities and where a huge model would be overkill.
